We often think about mentorship and networking as daunting tasks, like climbing a mountain or running a marathon. But what if, instead, we think of them more simply like throwing rocks into water - creating small ripples that have the potential to gain momentum, and ultimately lead to waves of success?
The Power of a Single Ripple
You've been here before. You’re at the office coffee bar and notice someone you admire. But Instead of overthinking and minding your business, you offer a simple hello. That small moment leads to a friendly conversation the following week and a month later, it turns into a one-on-one meeting. Fast forward and that same person becomes an advocate for your next promotion. It all started with a simple ripple - that initial hello.
Similarly, a post you share on LinkedIn might feel like a drop in the ocean, but it has the power to create waves. it could solicit a comment from a new connection which could lead to a deeper conversation, which in turn might lead to a job opportunity you never expected. One small action sets off a chain reaction of possibilities.
In my own example a few months ago, I was waiting for a table at a local restaurant when I started a conversation with the person next to me. We started with small talk about the wait time, then naturally shifted into the common "where are you from, what do you do?' introductions when strangers meet. As it turned out, he worked in a similar industry at a company that I had been eyeing. By the end of our meal, we exchanged numbers, and a few days later, I sent over my resume. That chance meeting eventually led to an interview and It all started with a simple hello. If I had been scrolling my phone during that wait, this would have been a missed opportunity.
Ripples Gain Strength Over Time
The beauty of initiating ripples is that they have the possibility to build upon one another. A casual introduction at a networking event might lead to a lunch meeting, which turns into a long-term mentorship. An insightful question asked in a team meeting could get you noticed by senior leadership, leading to new projects and career growth. The different possible scenarios are endless!
The key, however, is consistency. The more ripples you create, the greater your chances of seeing long-term results. You don’t need to force massive shifts overnight. Instead, embrace the idea that each interaction, each moment of curiosity, and each small act of putting yourself out there contributes to a larger impact.
Creating Your Own Ripple Effect
So how can you make this work in your life? Here are a few ways to start creating ripples:
Initiate small conversations – Be genuinely interested and engaging; it as easy as just saying "Hello!"
Show up and participate – Attend events, volunteer, and be present (and definitely don't be on your phone!)
Share your thoughts and ideas – Write a LinkedIn post, contribute to discussions, and ask thoughtful questions
Be a connector – Introduce people who might benefit from knowing each other.
Express appreciation – A simple thank-you can leave a lasting impression and strengthen relationships. (See my prior blog on "Giving Thanks in a Meaningful Way")
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to plan every detail of your career path or network with a rigid strategy. Instead, focus on taking small steps - because those steps, like ripples in water, have the potential to expand in ways you can’t yet predict. Each hello, each LinkedIn post, each moment of curiosity is a ripple that could set off waves of future success. The more ripples you create, the more mentors, supporters, and opportunities will naturally come your way - a true Mentorship Multiplier!
Start today. Say hello, ask the question, share the insight. You never know how far the ripple will go.
