Mentorship Multiplier: Why I’m Hooked on Lunchclub

Over the past eight weeks, I’ve been using Lunchclub - a free networking service that matches professionals for 1:1 conversation and it’s been an unexpectedly wonderful experience. I initially signed up out of curiosity from a network recommendation, hoping to meet a few new people and maybe sharpen my storytelling muscles. What I didn’t expect was just how valuable these conversations would be, both personally and professionally.

Here’s why it’s earned a permanent spot in my networking toolbox:

1. Real Conversations with Real Peers

The most important takeaway? I’ve met truly interesting people. Thoughtful, driven professionals who are either peers or further along in their careers. Every meeting has felt intentional, and I’ve walked away from each one with something valuable: a shared insight, a new idea, or a deeper connection.

2. These Connections Have Legs

Many of these initial meetings have already led to follow-ups, and I believe some of them will grow into lasting professional relationships. Of course, that only happens if you nurture them, which I plan to do. The beauty of Lunchclub is that it introduces the spark; it’s up to you to keep it alive.

3. Serendipity in Action

In one of my matches, I was paired with someone at a target company I’ve had my eye on. That’s what I call networking magic. These kinds of serendipitous meetings are hard to come by when you’re going it alone. Lunchclub’s algorithm makes it feel almost effortless.

4. From URL to IRL

While most meetings are virtual, I’ve even met three connections in person for coffee - and those meetings felt like instant friendships. There’s something powerful about turning a digital introduction into a real-world conversation.

5. Fresh Perspectives Across Industries

In one particularly memorable chat, I found myself swapping tariff mitigation strategies with someone from an entirely different industry. Not only was it fun, but it reminded me how many challenges, and solutions, are universal. These cross-functional conversations are often where the magic happens.

6. An Introvert’s Dream

As someone who leans introverted, I appreciate the format: one-on-one, no group video fatigue, no pressure to "work the room." It’s also been a great way to practice my conversation skills, especially storytelling. Every conversation is a chance to refine how I talk about my work, my values, and my impact.

7. Low Barrier, High Impact

It’s free. You can schedule ten meetings a week if you have the time and appetite for it, or just one a week as a lunchtime ritual. Either way, it’s time well spent.

A Few Things to Improve

No tool is perfect, and Lunchclub has its quirks.

  • The tech needs some love. The in-platform video often doesn’t load, so most meetings get moved to Zoom or Teams. Messaging can also be spotty.

  • Some users may have an agenda. While I’ve heard people complain that Lunchclub can be a vehicle for sales pitches, I haven’t personally experienced that. Sure, some folks have services to sell, but don’t we all in some way? Not a single conversation has felt like a waste of time.

Final Thought: Make It What You Need

Whether you’re job searching, building a mentorship circle, or just craving thoughtful professional conversations, Lunchclub is a worthy experiment. For me, it’s become a mentorship multiplier - a quiet but powerful way to expand my network, stretch my thinking, and build lasting connections.

If you’ve been hesitant to try it, let this be your nudge. Your next great conversation could be just one meeting away.

What a nice summary of your LunchClub experience. As someone who also uses LunchClub I could not have said it any better.
